HAPPILY MARRIED NOVEMBER 2011
In August 2000, I was hanging out with my friend, Melissa. She lived in Tempe AZ, near ASU. She invited me to go to a college party on with her one Friday night; it was there that I met Todd. There was a group of us at the party that ended up sitting down and talking the night away, Todd and I were 2 of the people in the group. The only thing that interrupted our group’s conversation was the break of dawn. We all stood up, said our goodbyes, and walked toward our vehicles to head home. Todd gently touched my hand so I would face him and gave me a huge hug. Then we smiled at each other, and before I knew it he leaned in and gave me a sweet kiss. We said goodbye and I climbed into Melissa’s car thinking, “He kissed me.” :) Later that afternoon, I realized that Todd and I hadn’t even exchanged numbers, so it was a good chance I would never see him again. However, as luck would have it, our paths crossed again the following night. We talked another night away with our friends. Before that night was over, he asked for my number…
I hit the snooze alarm on my phone for the 10th or 11th time that morning and I heard Todd tiptoeing over to my side of the bed. I opened my eyes to a very dark bedroom. He turned his phone light on and faced the light towards the floor. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust. When they did, I realized that in his left hand he held an open box, with a beautiful ring inside sparkling and glistening up at me. He said, “I was trying to figure out the perfect time to propose to you. Since 7’s are lucky for me, I wanted to take you for a hike on the 7th (two days earlier), but it was pouring rain. And I was trying to think of another way, another place, another time to propose to you… and then I realized, we have the rest of our lives to have special days and create special memories…” He got down on his one knee and said, “Heather, will you marry me?” My eyes welled with tears; my heart crept high in my chest. I hugged him lovingly and said, "yes." He gave me a long embrace and whispered in my ear, "I love you so much and I always will." …I found out later that he proposed on the day that would have been his bachan’s (grandmother’s) 100th birthday. That’s why he decided to propose on that day; how very sweet of him.
Todd and I both wanted a fall wedding. We both really like Novembers in Phoenix. The weather is amazing and there are so many happy times in November. The day he proposed, Todd mentioned getting married on 11.11.11. However, since we determined 11.11.11 fell on a Friday, we kept our options open. Shortly after getting engaged, one of Todd’s family members commented, “don’t have your wedding on a day that there is an ASU game”. Since there are quite a few season ticket holders to ASU football games in Todd’s family, us being 2 of them, this was definitely an aspect to take into consideration. Once ASU posted their 2011 football schedule, we decided on a date: Saturday, November 12, 2011. We have decided on colors: Black, Deep Red, and either Silver or Gold accents. And we would like to incorporate a Japanese cherry blossom theme in the wedding and reception as much as possible.
